The Black Sidis of Gujarat, India, are a Sufi community who were forcibly brought to India from East Africa in the 13th century. The four lead musicians and eight dancers who make up Sidi Goma preserve the ancient music and dance traditions their slave ancestors preserved down the generations. Their live performances are a vibrant overview of Sufi rituals and pagan assimilations that climax with a coconut-breaking dance. It underlines the unique Indian-African heritage Sidi Goma promotes worldwide.
